Preparing for the move

Our resident rooms at the Ben and Luanne Russell Assisted Living are probably not as big as your previous home so downsizing can be an important part of the process. It can be difficult to pick which items to keep in your possession, to store, to donate, sell or trash. Downsizing can also be emotionally trying so it is important to remind yourself that possessions are only that, they cannot surpass your connections to friends and family.

The physical act of moving does not have to be a stressful one. We are here to lend a helping hand by recommending local, trustworthy moving companies and other local service providers you might need. Enjoy this adventure! Be sure to check our move in checklist for everything you need to know before the big day.

Our Corner of the World:

Alexander City – The Gateway to Lake Martin

Tucked into the southernmost foothills of the Appalachians and surrounded by lakes, parklands and a National Forest, Alexander City is the kind of town that fills residents with pride and visitors with envy and awe. The crown jewel of this area is beautiful Lake Martin, a 44,000 acre water wonderland which provides 750 miles of wooded shoreline.

Alexander City residents place a premium on quality of life. The city boasts a very low crime rate and affordable cost-of-living. Although the population is 14,500, we enjoy a trade area population of approximately 125,000.

Alexander City is proud to boast a healthy business climate. Our local economy is based upon automotive manufacturing, foundries, wood products, store fixtures, retail, hospitality, health services and distribution.

Recognized as one of the premier healthcare facilities in the state, Russell Medical is the area’s largest hospital with 81 beds and 52 physicians on active staff. With sophisticated technology, doctors at the medical center treat patients in over 28 specialties. UAB Medicine –  Russell Medical Cancer Center provides comprehensive cancer treatment for patients including radiation and chemotherapy, and alleviates the burden of traveling out of the area for treatment.

Alexander City is proud of our public school system, which is well supported by our citizens. Children grow and learn together in a unique system where every child in the same grade attends the same school. Central Alabama Community College provides a two-year college education to more than 2000 students. The Betty Carol Graham Technology Center provides comprehensive technical programs not found in other institutions. To further enhance education, the City is home to Mamie’s Place, the first stand-alone public library dedicated exclusively for children.

A unique community benefit is The Gateway to Education Scholarship Program, which provides for free college tuition for all students attending Benjamin Russell High School, who meet entrance requirements, to attend Central Alabama Community College.

Alexander City is blessed with many recreational opportunities. The Charles Bailey Sportplex has a football stadium equal to that of a small college. There are soccer and baseball fields, a horse riding arena, gymnasium, picnic area, and the Imagination Station Playground. In addition, senior citizens have a designated building where they enjoy arts and crafts and hold social events.  The City also owns the former Russell Corporation recreational complex which houses an Olympic-size swimming pool.

From city-wide celebrations such as the Jazz Festival, Sun Festival, Oktoberfest, and Hometown Christmas, to cultural events such as the Sarah Towery Art Colony and Alexander City Arts, our city provides a quality of life that is second to none. Alexander City is steeped in history and tradition.  We welcome you to visit us again, and explore the uniqueness of Alexander City.
